책과 세계, 강유원, 살림

재밌는 책이 많은 살림지식총서 시리즈 중에 하나다.
강유원 교수의 <몸으로 하는 공부>라는 책을 먼저 접하고서 검색하던 중 딸려나온 <책과 세계>도 마저 구해 읽었다.

대략 서양의 고전에 대해 강유원 교수가 텍스트와 컨텍스트를 분리해가며 짤막하게 설명해 놓은 그런 책이다. 그 짤막의 정도가 살림지식총서답게 굉장히 짤막하다. 그래서 서양고전에 대해 한 번 훓는 느낌도 들고 이해하지 못했던 컨텍스트에 대한 이야기도 보고 할 수 있는 기회였으나 소개한 고전들을 대부분 읽어보지 않은 관계로 이해를 했다고는 할 수 없다.-_-

하여, 여기 몇 몇 구절을 옮겨 적어 블로그를 유익하게 하겠다.

@ 사자가 위장에 탈이 나면 풀을 먹듯이, 병든 인간만이 책을 읽는다.(중략)그런데 우리는 책을 읽어야 한다는 강박관념에 시달린다. (중략)'책을 읽어야 한다'는 것은 소수의 책 읽는 이들이 벌이는 일종의 음모임에 틀림없다.

-> 병든 인간이 책을 읽는다는 것은 책을 읽으면 자기가 병이 들었다는 것을 안다는 것일까...


@수메르의 점토판의 95%가 경제에 관한(세속적인) 내용을 담고 있다. (중략) 이는 점을 친 결과를 기록했던 중국의 갑골문과 구별되는 수메르 문명의 특징을 보여주는 것이다. 세속에 법칙에 의해 살아가는 것이 서구의 전통이다.

-> 나도 그렇게 생각한다.


@ 이집트의 벽화는 있는 그대로의 묘사를 보여주지 않는다. (중략) 의도적으로 내버린 것이다. (중략) 그들은 자연 배후에 놓인 법칙성에 주목하였다. 의도적으로 포기된 자연묘사는 형식주의에 이르렀고, 이제 자연은 인간에 대립해 있는 타자로서 나타났다.

-> 어제의 삼각형이 오늘의 사각형이라도 그 면적은 같다. 영원불멸과 맞닿은 점을 고대 이집트인들은 기하학이라고 보았다. '단순함이 아름다움'이라는 말과도 일맥상통함이 있지 않나. 미니멀리즘이니 하는 것들은 이때부터 예견된 것이었나.


@ 직립보행 이 후 모든 인간의 행위는 환경과의 끊임없는 소통의 산물이다. 인간이 폭력적인 것은 폭력적이지 않으면 살아가기 힘든 환경에서 살고 있기 때문이다.
